About me
I’m CJ and I’ve been making functional ceramics since 2017.
I am a mostly self-taught potter, having learned the craft from other potters and dear friends at community studios in Oxford and more recently at Clayspace in Margate. All my pots are made in these lively communal spaces!
I was inspired to explore pottery on a trip to Copenhagen in 2013. It took years to finally take my plunge into clay, where I’ve learned pottery as an outlet from my studies and day jobs in agricultural and wild food value chain sustainability.
I dabble in many different themes, textures, patterns, and colours throughout the seasons of the year (and life!). I hope that these come together to create an eclectic body of work that’s worth collecting over time. No matter what design style I’m interested in at the moment, function and pleasure are at the center of my work.
I make pottery that I want to use and that are meant to be cherished for the long haul. My main goal when making ceramics is to craft objects that are effortlessly pleasurable to use everyday. For example, I think it’s important for mugs to keep coffee warm until you’re finished drinking, for handles to be big enough to keep knuckles away from hot mug sides, and I love a plate that keeps yummy sauces from dribbling over the edge and onto the table.
I’m keenly aware of the energy-intensive nature of ceramics production and want to inspire a “slow fashion” mindset for folks who buy my pottery and tableware. This means making pots that you’ll want to keep using for decades!
I hope my pots make their ways into loving homes for you to enjoy with lots of tasty meals, bunches of flowers, hot coffees, and memories for years to come.
